Dr. Angela Melchiorre renews collaboration with HREA for e-learning course on the Right to Education
In February and March 2012 Dr. Angela Melchiorre , E.MA Programme Director, will once again teach the e-learning course on the Right to Education offered by Human Rights Education Associates (HREA ) in collaboration with The Right to Education Project.
The purpose of this course - says Dr. Melchiorre - is to introduce staff of development agencies, representatives of inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations, activists and educationalists to critical concepts and issues necessary to develop more articulated and effective strategies and policies in the field of education as a human right.
The course applies a human rights advocacy methodology whereby participants learn to work at the level of: substance (being aware of the content and meaning of the right to education in order to identify violations); structure (identifying duty-bearers and using legal instruments to encourage accountability); society (identifying actions and behavioural/value changes in order to enhance participation of rights-holders).
This combination of academic knowledge and policy-oriented practice is very similar to the approach of the E.MA Programme and EIUC’s activities - concludes Prof. Benoit-Rohmer, EIUC Secretary General - therefore we welcome this initiative and hope to reinforce this collaboration in the future.
Dr. Angela Melchiorre is a member of the Advisory Panel of The Right to Education Project and has been the instructor for this e-learning course since 2010. The deadline for applying is 1 December 2011. For more information please visit http://www.hrea.org/index.php?base_id=714&language_id=1

19 - 21 October 2011: E.MA/EIUC at Biennale Sessions

For the first time in its long history, the European Master’s Degree in Human Rights and Democratisation (E.MA) managed by EIUC included a study visit to the Venice Biennale as part of the teaching programme 2011/2012. The initiative is part of Biennale Sessions, a project designed specifically for universities and academic institutions.
Taking inspiration from the title and main themes of the 54th International Art Exhibition, E.MA students were encouraged to look at the works in display through the lens of human rights and concepts of nation, identity and community. In the final workshop they discussed their impressions, attempted to identify a red thread linking these human rights concepts to some selected works of art, and drew conclusions on the application of human rights in art and vice-versa.
During the visits they were accompanied by 2 lecturers and other members of the E.MA Team who also facilitated discussions and preparation for the final workshop.
The schedule was as follows:
- Wednesday 19 October 2011: 16.30-18.00 visit
- Thursday 20 October 2011: 14.30-18.00 visit
- Friday 21 October 2011: 11.45-12.45 class work in preparation to workshop (@EIUC); 15.00-16.30 Workshop

Dr. Angela Melchiorre is the new E.MA Programme Director for the ac.year 2011/2012
The EIUC/E.MA Governing Bodies are happy to announce the appointment of Dr. Angela Melchiorre as the new E.MA Programme Director of the European Master in Human Rights and Democratisation (E.MA) for the academic year 2011/2012.
With 15 years of experience in academic, governmental and non-governmental human rights work, Dr. Melchiorre brings a wealth of knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to the Programme.
In her last assignment as Research Coordinator for the Right to Education Project within ActionAid International in London, she led strategic research on rights-based approaches to education, gender, development and extreme poverty. In this role she also enjoyed teaching the online course on the right to education offered by HREA. Before joining ActionAid, she worked as Lecturer in Human Rights on the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights at the University of London, developing in particular the practice-oriented component of the course.
Prior to that experience, she was Human Rights Advisor for the Italian Permanent Mission at the UN in Geneva and New York, chairing multilateral negotiations on the rights of the child and on Afghanistan. In her personal capacity, she also worked as a consultant for UNESCO-IBE, the first UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education Prof. Katarina Tomaševski, and UNICEF-Italy.
Dr. Melchiorre’s areas of expertise are the right to education, the UN human rights system, and children’s rights. She is the author of At what age... are school-children employed, married and taken to court?, a worldwide comparative analysis of minimum ages under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (third edition in print). As a spin-off from this work, she wrote her PhD thesis on child marriage and the CRC.
Dr. Angela Melchiorre’s history with the E.MA Programme speaks by itself of her commitment: she graduated from the course in 2000, worked as E.MA tutor in 2000/2001, was awarded the E.MA Internship in 2001, participated in the E.MA Fellowship in 2003, and acted as Geneva liaison officer for the E.MA Fellowship in 2004.
